Kira is the protagonist of graphic novel THE DESCEND.

Uneasy Childhood on Voskhod

Kira was born to a reclusive family of farmers. Vladimir and Karina did not have many contacts with the outside world except for trading, as they were devoted worshippers of Uuma-Oogma. Despite their beliefs, Kira’s parents were obliged by the Federal law to allow her to study in a public school. This way since the early childhood Kira saw herself as a conduit between the enclosed religious bubble of her parents and the hurricane of ideas from the outside world.

Still, just like her family, Kira was a faithful worshipper herself and tried to convert her classmates into believing in the teachings of Uuma-Oogma. Because of that, teenage Kira used to be called the “Weirdo from the hill” and constantly bullied by other kids.

When Kira turned 15 years of age, an accident happened that took lives of both of her parents and sent her into the custody of local social services. Grieving about her parents and resenting the inhumane authorities turned Kira into a difficult teenager. Because of violent conflicts with her foster parents and other children, Kira got transferred between whopping eight different foster families over three years until her legal maturity.

Federal Defense Force

Over years of jumping between different homes, Kira’s devotion to Uuma-Oogma have completely weathered away. Her faith got replaced with a deep resentment towards all settled down people and irrational fear of any psychological attachment. Kira felt betrayed by everyone, her long dead cultist parents included. And Kira’s last foster family did not try to convince her otherwise as they tossed Kira out on the street on her 18th birthday.

Without anywhere else to go, Kira applied to join the Federal Defense Force. These were five years of constant movement between bases in federal space with short intermissions of skirmishes with Imperial forces. By the expiration of her contract, Kira moved to the private sector and started working as a security detail for interstellar cargo shipping companies.

Life of an Independent Contractor

Over three years of service Kira did not disappoint her employers even once, but long hauls in the company of miners and truckers began taking toll on her. Kira felt increasingly older and lonely.

In order to shake herself out of depression and change her social circle, Kira applied to a position of a mission security detail for BioStar, one of Federation’s largest pharmaceutical corporations. Her application got approved and Kira joined the crew of a Federal Science Cruiser FCS Poddubny.

Behind the Scenes

Kira is an original character inspired by multiple movies like Galaxy of Terror and Creature. Kira’s storyline was written as a study about how early childhood abuse may may keep hurting a survivor even through their adult life.
